UML - The Emerging Hardware Description Language?

چکیده

The Unified Modeling LanguageTM (UML) has received a wide acceptance in the area of software engineering over the last years. In its last revision, UML [4] (i.e., UML 2.0) is composed of a set of structural (classes, components, composite structures, deployments) and behavioral concepts (actions, activities, state machines, interactions, use cases), which are clearly separated from their visual representation, i.e., the diagrams composed of graphical symbols. Meanwhile, some UML diagrams and their variations also found application in various areas for electronic systems design like requirements specification, testbenches, architectural descriptions, and behavioural modelling [1]. Nevertheless, in most cases they are just applied as a graphical language for drawing diagrams. This is partly due to UML’s weak and/or inappropriate behavioral semantics. Therefore, in its first introduction to hardware design, UML’s greatest potential certainly lies in its structural parts, which apply well to current practices in IP integration and packaging for component and interface descriptions and which seamlessly complement current HDLs.

Implementation of Face Recognition Algorithm on Fields Programmable Gate Array Card

The evolution of today's application technologies requires a certain level of robustness, reliability and ease of integration. We choose the Fields Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) hardware description language to implement the facial recognition algorithm based on "Eigen faces" using Principal Component Analysis. In this paper, we first present an overview of the PCA used for facial recognition,...

From UML to HDL: a Model Driven Architectural Approach to Hardware-Software Co-Design

The SMU Co-Design Project is an effort to target the problem of hardware/software co-design via an open source laboratory for studying hardware-software integration. The project focuses on the use of Model Driven Architectures (MDA) to define high-level modelbased system descriptions that can be implemented in either hardware or software. Utilizing component and state diagrams based on the Unif...

Aspect Oriented UML to ECORE Model Transformation

With the emerging concept of model transformation, information can be extracted from one or more source models to produce the target models. The conversion of these models can be done automatically with specific transformation languages. This conversion requires mapping between both models with the help of dynamic hash tables. Hash tables store reference links between the elements of the source...

Hierarchical Configurable Petri Net Modeling in VHDL

The paper presents method for hierarchical configurable Petri nets description in VHDL language. Dual model is an alternative way for behavioral description of the discrete control process. Dual model consists of two correlated models: UML state machine diagram and hierarchical configurable Petri net (HCfgPN). HCfgPN are Petri nets variant with direct support of exceptions handling mechanism. L...

Using the UML for Architectural Description

There is much interest in using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) for architectural description – those techniques by which architects sketch, capture, model, document and analyze architectural knowledge and decisions about software-intensive systems. IEEE P1471, the Recommended Practice for Architectural Description, represents an emerging consensus for specifying the content of an architect...
